Happy New Years Everyone!  And welcome to 2019!

New years is a time to let go of the old, welcome the new, say goodbye to bad habits, and try to build better ones.  It is also a time where many of us decide to better ourselves by making some new years resolutions. But be sure to carefully plan and prepare for yours so that you can actually follow through.

In the last few years the most common new years resolution in the United States has been to lose weight.  Many people do this by joining a gym, going on a diet, hiring a personal trainer, reading every new fitness fad, etc etc.  The problem with these actions is that there is no plan in place.  Sure joining a gym CAN help you lose weight, but you actually have to go to that gym and actually exercise, hard, while there.  It's great to say we will change our diet but without a specific plan or support we will inevitably fall back into old habits.

The trick to succeeding with any major life change is to devise a plan, set the groundwork, prepare for obstacles, and anticipate pitfalls.  For a goal like losing weight a solid support group can be vital to success.  If you can develop a group to hold you accountable to your plan then you will become far more likely to actually put in the work and therefore lose the desired weight.  It's very easy to go home and sit on the couch with a drink in hand and the TV on after work.  It's much harder to walk into a gym, put in an hours worth of work, and walk out dripping in sweat.  But this is what it takes to actually lose the weight and change our bodies.  If you know your three best friends are all meeting you at the gym it makes it a little harder to bail on that hour or exercise.  The community of your workouts will breed intensity and with intensity comes progress.  As this becomes a habit it also becomes more desirable and you'll begin to look forward to that hour or work you used to look at as torture.

There are many ways to stay committed to a goal like losing weight but we have found that those who develop a strong support group or community are the ones that stick with their goal the longest and are therefore the ones that actually reach that goal.
